The middle red large Bakelite button is an evil eye.  So many of the buttons are Bakelite, celluloid, carved, and unusual.

This palm shaped amulet talisman is an important symbol in Judaism and many other religions.  The Hamsa is also an important amulet in Kabbalah and is often used to counter act the evil eye.
